Does Weight Loss Seem To Be Your Mission: Impossible?

January 26, 2012

By King Hoover- Internationally recognized Fitness Expert I must have been pretty young when I first started watching the Mission Impossible TV show, debuting in 1966 it told the stories of successful operations by the IMF- Impossible Mission Force. Each episode, the mysterious Secretary would leave a message for the team's leader, Mr. Phelps that would describe world-saving endeavors, incredible obstacles and seemingly insurmountable opposition. The Secretary always reminded Mr. Phelps that if he or any of his Team were caught, the Secretary would "disavow any knowledge of their actions", the message would then self-destruct 5 seconds later. For many folks, losing weight, getting in shape or maintaining a healthy lifestyle appears to be just as 'impossible' as some of the missions the IMF took on. Fitting exercise into a busy schedule of work, family and social commitments, managing to make 'strategic' food selections while being surrounded by dangerous (calorically and nutritionally) options that are constantly trying to 'capture' the Team Member or cause 'Mission Failure'. And yet, your Health and Well-being will literally determine how long you remain an Agent representing your family as protector, provider and pacesetter all of which can seem fairly impossible at times. The Impossible Mission Force had a 100% success rate, never failing on a mission, so how can we improve our own Fitness Mission Rating and qualify for the IMF ourselves? I'm so glad you asked... In the latest film "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol", the unthinkable has happened- the IMF has been framed for the bombing of the Kremilin and bringing the world to the brink of nuclear war. The Team has been disavowed and The Secretary- is dead...what now? In the previous 3 films, Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, has pretty much had to go it alone at key points in the Mission. This time however, when the planned mission 'goes South', his Team pulls together and provides the support necessary for the IMF to save the world again. Similarly we need the same kind of Help, a Team that will come alongside our weight loss or exercise efforts and make the difference in Mission Accomplished or Mission Failure. Ten separate studies performed between 1988 and 2009 all demonstrated a positive correlation between social or familial support and success in weight loss. Whether the support came from a family-of-origin, spouse, a circle of confidants, a boyfriend or a girlfriend, the outcome was a much improved physique and a healthier 'you'. Assembling your Team means getting Mission buy-in from the folks around you be it Friends, or More-Than-Friends, they all have a stake in your suriving or thriving while On-Mission. If you let them know that you need their help and would appreciate their encouragement or participation if possible- you'll likely get a majority of takers. Deep down, we want to make a positive difference in the lives of others around us, if you can do so just by being a Cheerleader or not 'tripping the runner', who wouldn't sign up for that? Dr. Evil? Next, we need to Equip you for your Mission. On the TV show and in the films, the IMF Agents we're always outfitted with cutting-edge technology to help them achieve their objective. In our case, we want an Exercise Program that is state-of-the-art and based on the very latest science on metabolically demanding Resistance Training, safe and effective exercises and Compound Movements for a maximum return on our Mission Investment. The same would be said for our Nutrition and Meal Plan, the days of Chicken Breasts, Broccoli, Green Beans, Egg Whites and Oatmeal comprising the majority of your day's intake is so 1980's. It is actually illegal in most States to recommend or provide a 'diet' to someone that has not been designed by a Registered Dietician. You may say "It's not Rocket Science", but Nutrition is a component of Biology and Biology IS a Science after all. Life Sciences are about precision because your personal biology is VERY important- its the only one you have. The TV episodes and the newer films all had one thing in common- twists and turns in the Mission Plot so that no matter how well the IMF members had planned, someone always did something unexpected, something wasn't where it was supposed to be or their technology malfunctioned. The takaway is "Don't sweat it!" The Mission goes on in spite of setbacks, obstacles and challenges because it is so worthwhile- we're saving a Life, our own! If you follow these guidelines when planning your own Mission: Possible, it is not a matter of whether or not you will achieve your Mission Objective, only a matter of how soon. If you need help planning your Mission Strategy, give me a call, I'd be happy to provide you some FREE resources to get you moving toward your objective fast. Remember..it's "Your Mission, should you decide to accept it", but if you don't... you're Self Destructing already.
